Possible EOS-M7 specifications? EOS-M the end is near? (Again)
The EOS-M has probably been rumored or suggested to be dead or to be killed off by Canon, more than even Olympus. However, a new rumor suggests some strange M7 specifications that are neither M7 worthy or even M50 worthy and suggest they'll do just that.
I don't know what to make out of this rumor. I mean the video features are arguably worse than the M6, the shooting performance most certainly is worse than the M6. It seems like the M7 is not positioned as a "flagship" replacement of the M5, and over the M6 Mark II, but more a replacement for .. the M50? Maybe this is the EOS group re-make of what a "flagship" EOS-M should look like and they don't really care? Would it make sense as an M50 Mark II? No, not at all with that price. Then again, the specifications are too nuts to be fake, so there's that;
- 32mp APS-C sensor with DPAF II
- IBIS
- Slightly renewed DIGIC LSI
- Cheap EVF, 2.36Mdots
- Dual SD Cards, speed limits are same as 4 years old cameras
- 12fps serial shooting, without AF active
- 4K from 24p to 60p, using all APS-C sensor sampling
- 1080p up to 120p (overheating at 120fps)
- CLog mode for marketing purposes
- $1599 price
- Canon plans to destroy the whole M lineup and all lenses as soon as 2021, but the camera had been developed for a long time and they plan to sell it first.
I can't make heads or tails out of this rumor, except if this camera does come out for the M line, me as a customer of EOS-M since the original M, may just skip the camera and keep my M6 Mark II. While the built-in EVF would be far handier, it's a lesser camera in every way. Not also sure about the SD card comment. If it uses SD UHS-II then those speeds haven't changed in a while but who really cares? Clog for marketing purposes? Odd comment.
Is the death of EOS-M here at last? It would seem strange that when the world is still spinning back up again from COVID-19 that you would kill off one of your most successful camera lines. But to be honest, this camera at $1599 and no M50 Mark II against serious competition would probably do just that.
The EOS-M dying in favor of the RF mount, has certainly been suggested before, but that's not really Canon's mode of operation - let the customer decide what they are buying and the EOS-M still competes well against the Z, Fuji and Sony APS-C camera body lineups. As a matter of fact, only Sony has come close to unseating the popular M50. CanonRumors mentions that an 18-45 is coming next year, and we do know that's a 100% certainty that it is - one comment though, we have had a lens like that in the past, the 17-40mm F4L, a cheaper STM version could certainly be 18-45mm. Yes, you can use full-frame lenses on APS-C cameras, it's not optimum, especially for the normal zoom lenses. 18-45 as well would be a very strange kit lens, considering all Canon has to do is copy the existing EF-M 15-45 and add something called QC to the mix and they wouldn't have a bad kit lens. Why have a worse kit lens if you are moving over the RF mount?
Take it as you will, things will be clearer (or crazier) in a few weeks time.
