New Rumor: Sigma releasing new lenses for the Canon RF mount

A new rumor has surfaced that very soon Sigma is going to announce some new lenses for the Sony FE mount, however, what is important here to us is that this rumor suggests that they will also release these lenses at a future time for the RF mount.

I guess this is kind of a no-brainer really. If Sigma is creating native mirrorless lenses, I would imagine they'll come out on the L mount, which is the deepest of the full frame mirrorless mounts (along with the Canon RF mount) flange to sensor distance of 20mm.  So if these lenses work on the L-mount, they will most assuredly work with the E, RF and Z-mount.  It's just a matter of different protocol and pin support, which Sigma famously already knows how to do from its experience with DSLR mounts.  Releasing them first on the Sony E mount, is simple economics.

Another reason, as it was pointed out to me (Thanks!) for coming out first for Sony is that the element design with the smallest mount diameter is Sony, which probably restricts the lens design the most.

It will be curious if there are other changes then just the mounts, such as will they have the RF control ring?  If not, there could be a compelling reason to wait for Canon's versions of these lenses.

The lenses in question are supposed to be the;

  • 35mm f/1.2
  • 45mm f/2.8
  • 12-24mm f/2.8
  • 24-70mm f/2.8

We will end up seeing a lot of overlap with these lenses with RF lenses from Canon, however, for the short term, these may come out quicker than Canon's as they may have slightly different priorities.
