New Rumor: Canon RF 35mm F1.2 coming in two versions
A new rumor from CanonRumors has surfaced that the Canon RF 35mm F1.2 may get the "DS" treatment and come out with two versions.
I'll go out on a limb and suggest if the sales of the 85mm F1.2 USM and 85mm F1.2 USM DS were solid, there's a good chance of this happening to both the 35mm F1.2 and the 50mm F1.2.
The "DS" is simply an optical coating difference to the existing formula so it wouldn't even require that effort from the original design of the lens.
Shown here is the optical design of the Canon RF 85mm F1.2 USM DS.
The DS "coating" is applied to the third element from the left and one additional element in first grouping to the right of the aperture. Look for the purple dashed line. Otherwise, outside of the two coatings, the optical design is exactly the same as the Canon RF 85mm F1.2 USM.
For reference, the blue dashed line is ASC (Air Sphere Coatings), and the solid purple is BR.
That's the beauty of DS, Canon can put it on just about any lens they deem worthy and if there's a market for it. Doing a normal soft focus lens, requires an entirely different element design and thus costing more for a limited sales version of the lens.
Will this happen? If sales of the 85mm F1.2 DS are strong, there's no reason Canon would not do it.
