GVM Pro SD500B Bi-Color LED Monolight

On Sale: $469, Regular: $799

The GVM Pro SD500B Bi-Color LED Monolight is suitable for videographers and professional photographers. It features an output of 500W of light, achieving 81,500 lux at a little more than 3 feet with the reflector. Its color temperature can be adjusted from 2700K to 6800K, making it convenient for obtaining the intended mood, whether warm or cooler. With a CRI and TLCI of 97+, colors render true to life. It's aluminum construction weighs in at around 5 kg, so it's solid enough for everyday use but not a chore to take to a shoot.

You have a few options for how to control it, which makes things easier. There are also knobs and a clear LCD readout on the light itself, but you can also control it using the GVM app on your phone through Bluetooth for adjustments from across the room. For more elaborate setups, it's also compatible with DMX control in 8-bit or 16-smodes. It features 12 special effects like lightning or candle flickers that can add a really nice touch to a project. You can either run it with an AC cord or with two V-mount batteries, though you must use both batteries to make it work, which is a pain in the field. It is water-resistant with an IPX4 rating, so it will not be harmed by a light rain.

The SD500B has a Bowens mount, which means you can attach a number of different modifiers like softboxes or snoots to shape the light into what you need. The fans are silent and keep everything cool—under 40dB—so they won't get in the way of your audio. Some people say the app is somewhat tricky to use, and needing two batteries for portable use isn't ideal if you're shooting in the field. But for the cost and all the features you get, it's a good piece of kit that can handle most lighting needs without too much trouble.
