EVF Patent for a Powershot G9x or G7x series sized camera body
Japan Patent Application 2017-003630
Looking through the Japan Patent applications we found this little gem showing us a different way of putting an EVF into an existing powershot camera body and maintaining the built in flash and the current size of the camera.
Usually adding an EVF into a camera in the rangefinder location introduces some compromise in either:
- LCD size (for example, Sony and others goes to 16:9 LCD screens)
- You lose the built in flash
- you increase the size or weight
- you are limited to small viewpoint EVF's
Canon's answer to this is to put the EVF into the camera body, but have you flip up the screen out of the way to expose the EVF.
There are some problems with this technique, such as the fact that you can't use touchscreen AF while looking through the EVF, but your face doesn't change your AF as it can do on the center position AF such as the M5 or G3X, so there's good and bad here.
This is an interesting patent showing that Canon is certainly looking at adding EVF's to the remainder of the powershot lineup.
