Canon Patent Application: Improved EVF Optics

Canon has continued to research better EVF optics, as this patent application suggests.  Canon is looking to receive a patent for optics that provide high magnification and long eye relief.

In an electronic viewfinder (observation device) conventionally used in an image pickup device (camera) such as a video camera or a still camera, an eyepiece is used to magnify and observe an image displayed on a liquid crystal screen or the like. An optical system is used. In the electronic viewfinder, in order to make the image display surface highly visible and easy to see, it is necessary to have a high observation magnification and a long eye relief.

The goal is to do this while also keeping the size of the optics small to minimize both size and weight. A consideration of this patent is that this is for EVF LCD panels, as Canon states, less than 20mm diagonal.  For cameras though, this would still fit the majority if not all the current EVF panels in current use, as most are around .47 inch or 12mm size,
