The Canon M6 Mark II is discontinued in Japan

Well, it was a matter of time until the EOS-M is dead crowd just may be right, and we may be at that stage right now.

Canon Japan has officially discontinued the M6 Mark II camera body.  It should be noted that no EOS-M lenses outside of the legacy 18-55 which was replaced by the 15-45mm have been discontinued, unlike EF lenses.

What does this mean?

Let's face it, the M50 Mark II was the last thing released by Canon for the EOS-M lineup and it was halfhearted at best in terms of an upgrade, and that was a while ago being in October 2020.  We have to go all the way back to September 2018 since the EOS-M has received a new lens.

As far as I could tell in either Japan or the even USA, according to sales numbers I've been privy to, the M6 Mark II was never a good seller.  The M50 and M50 Mark ii rule the sales numbers for the EOS-M system.  They are responsible for Canon's market share staying at around 50% for more than a few years.

If we step back from the "EOS-M is dead" ledge and look at it, it could simply be that Canon feels the M50 is good enough for the system and has no plans on the M6/M5 camera bodies which I presume never sold well.  So it could simply be that Canon doesn't see the need with supply chain issues to keep so many cameras going that simply are not selling in volume, and if they have triage parts, it will be to remove low volume sellers.  

I know some are saying, that the R7 is coming and that will replace all of the EOS-M. 

Well, that would be nice, if Canon would simply decide to rip the bandaid off all at once, but an R7 with maybe 1 or 2 rumored APS-C lenses (which we've never ever had a clue of on a roadmap - EVER) won't replace the EOS-M system.  About those lenses, the APS-C system under RF has been rumored for over 2 years now but delayed because of COVID-19 supply chain issues. If there were lenses slated to be released we would have seen them on the roadmaps years ago.  They aren't (and no, the 18-45mm is a full-frame lens).  

As I've mentioned here, if Canon is going to do it - then do it right, move the entire system.  Make an R50, R200, R7, and port the EF-M lenses especially the EF-M 32mm, EF-M 11-22m, EF-M 22mm, and even the EF-M 18-150mm. Fire the 15-45mm into the sun and make a new one of those, please.  Add in a 15-50mm F2.8 and a 50-150mm F2.8, and we're all good and we won't ask for anything more.
