New Rumor: Price of Canon EOS R5 under $4000 USD
A new rumor from CanonRumors suggests that from a reliable source, the price of the R5 will be under $4000.
I certainly think this is very probable. If we look at the prior releases of the 5D series cameras which this is the RF mount equivalent of, we have;
Model |
Year |
MSRP |
Inflation 2020 USD |
Canon 5D |
2005 |
$ 3,299 |
$ 4,330 |
Canon 5D Mark II |
2008 |
$ 2,699 |
$ 3,214 |
Canon 5D Mark III |
2012 |
$ 3,499 |
$ 3,907 |
Canon 5D Mark IV |
2016 |
$ 3,499 |
$ 3,737 |
You'll quickly notice that the inflationary price of the 5D has ranged from $3200 to $3900 in today's dollars after the initial classic 5D was released, and seems to have settled near the high end of $3000 as time has passed. Even the MSRP has been consistent for the last two 5D releases at $3499. Having the R5 fall within the range of 5D DSLR releases makes it more palatable for 5D DSLR users to transition to the new R5. Canon is trying to convince its massive install base to start moving over to the RF mount. The R5 is certainly a compelling reason to migrate.
I think personally the price this far out can change, especially with the current economic uncertainties the world is going through right now. Considering that the US price, is an import from Japan, there may be changes as it gets closer to release.
