More rumors swirl about the EF 70-200MM F/2.8L IS III

There's more mention of a Canon EF 70-200 2.8L III replacement coming "soon" as well we have yet to hear about what happened to the Canon 70-200 F4L IS II.

The 70-200 2.8L II is just a shade over 8 years old now, it's certainly due to be replaced in the "soon" time frame, however perhaps not as immediate as the 2006 version of the 70-200 F4L IS.  The 70-200 2.8L II has probably received the most fierce competition from competing lenses from Nikon and Sony which may cause the 2.8 version to be updated first.

While both lenses have no critical reason for replacement except for increased competition. Lens patent applications with updated IS, improved CA have all been seen over the last 6 months.

Canon Rumors states with the 70-200 2.8L IS III lately;

The announcement for the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II which was scheduled for this past April, appears to have been delayed. We’re still being told that it is coming “soon”. However, as mentioned preciously, we don’t think this is the last 70-200mm lens coming from Canon in 2018.

We’re being told again that a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III could be announced in the 2nd half of 2018. We figured Photokina 2018 in September would be a good place to announce it, however it’s always possible that the lens gets announced after the show.
