Notice anything? Yes, these lenses are almost exactly the same as their EF counterpart. Both of them are exactly 24mm longer than their EF counterparts, which is the exact difference in focal plane distance between the EF mount and the RF mount.  It's pretty safe at this time to state, that these lenses are most likely the exact same between the RF and EF lens and I guess are RF version 1 lenses.  THere may be firmware and electronics difference as I'm sure the RF lenses have a native RF communication protocol.

The Canon RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM is a completely different lens from it's EF counterpart.

Edit:  Just after we published this, Nokishita released the text PDF of the Sales summary of the Canon RF 400mm F2.8L IS USM, and as we expected, it's optically identical.  You can download and read the full PDF below.

The latest EF version of the 400mm f/2.8L IS lens, introduced in late 2018, preserved the legendary sharpness of previous EF400mm f/2.8L lenses, but with a dramatic reduction in overall weight. The RF version, dedicated to EOS R-series cameras, preserves this advantage, providing outstanding handling for a super-tele lens with an f/2.8 maximum aperture. Numerous optical and mechanical steps combine for this supremely light weight, transforming the RF400mm F2.8L IS USM into a lens that’s equally at home in situations requiring mobility and portability — such as motorsports and wildlife — as it is fixed on home plate at a night baseball game. And, since it uses the same optical design as the EF version III lens, the same superb image quality can be expected.

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
