New Rumor: More information on the Canon EOS R5c

Some more information is out about the Canon R5c.  I think it's pretty much a given that this camera is coming, given the increased competition in the 8k video realm.  Most of the rumored specifications are pretty logical and simply "make sense", as listed from CanonRumors;

  • Canon Log 3
  • Maybe Canon Log 2
  • Unlimited 8K30P recording in Cinema RAW Light. XF-AVC and MP4
  • Timecode in/out
  • EOS R3 accessory shoe. Which will work with accessories such as the Tascam XLR module.
  • Active cooling
  • 3/8″ or 1/4″ mounting point on the EVF for a top handle that won’t interfere with the hot shoe (not sure how this will work to be honest)
  • Full-size HDMI Port
  • The LCD has been moved further back to accommodate the cooling fan. So this likely means that it won’t recess into the body like the Canon EOS R5.

A few notables are missing from this such as waveform support but in all, this is pretty much a given for a video-based version of the R5.

I think the only curious element for me will be - what sensor?

The path of least resistance is to re-use the R5 sensor but that is starting to look dated.  The original rumors suggested that the R5 sensor will be used but with so much time between the development of the R5 and this camera, there is certainly enough time to put another sensor in there - such as a stacked or global shutter sensor.  It's even possible for Canon to create multiple versions of this camera with various sensors, as they did for the cinema line.

We shall see, this camera is expected now sometime in 2022 as the production timeline continue to slip.

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
