New Rumor: EOS R high MP camera (or EOS R Pro) coming in early 2020.

A new rumor surfaced today that an EOS R Pro will be released for the Photography Show 2020 and released shortly afterward.  The rumor claims that the camera would have somewhere around 60MP.

Canon has announced cameras in March after CP+ in the past, for instance, the Canon 5D Mark III was announced on March 2, 2012. However, to be fair, that date was probably chosen because it was the 25th anniversary of the EOS line.

As far as the rumored camera, 60MP in my mind seems a bit low for Canon.

This rumor seems to confuse a pro or a 5D like camera that will be an RF mount camera versus a 1 series camera that will be for the RF mount.  A more professional RF mount camera than the EOS R would have dual card slots, increased weather sealing, improved ergonomics, higher performance, etc.  Also with the case of this rumored camera, higher MP's as well.  There are a few reasons why a 1 series RF camera would be different than this;

  1. I find it highly unlikely that Canon will throw away 30+ years of 1 series ergonomics and just do one professional camera for the RF mount.  Canon will want to seamlessly transfer those professional 1 series users from the EF mount to the RF mount, and they have always been resistant to creative ergonomic changes.  I also can't see Canon forcing everyone back into 1 series ergonomics either.
  2. A 1 series RF camera, would most likely be like the 1DX Mark III, lower in MP's, and a much faster camera - it's main competition right now is the Sony A9 II.

The 1 series RF camera isn't supposed to be out until 2021, however, it's been a long-standing belief that next year will have at least 1 RF camera that is more professional in appearance and functionality than the EOS R.  I don't see how this rumor supplants the belief that the 1 series RF camera will be out in 2021.  I'm also of the mind that Canon will release a higher MP camera than 60MP.  This sounds like a "me too" rumor after the release of the Sony A7R IV.

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
