Canon Patent Application: Canon RF Macro Lenses

One series of lenses we can pretty confidently say will be coming to the RF mount. It's just a matter of time, and that's the true macro lenses for the RF system.

Right now, Canon is simply offering lenses with an advanced close focusing mechanism that allows for 1:3 to 1:2 macro, however, the true 1:1 macros have yet to make an appearance.

In this patent application, it's all about the 1:1 macros that alot of people are waiting for.  While alot of these macros seem certainly possible, with many of them the backfocus (BF) seems to be pretty low.  The distance between the sensor and the mount (not including the filter stack on top of the sensor) is 20mm.  So if the BF number is 10mm that means that the back element is sitting back at least 10mm from the mount that doesn't include any protection that sits around the element as well which usually adds another 1-2mm..  I can respect a 3-6mm ingress, but 10mm or so seems a little much to me.  Thus a lot of these I'm going to say aren't that likely to be actually implemented.

I know our rumors have though that a 100mm F2.0 macro is coming - it's entirely possible that Canon will create more than one and do the familiar USM / STM segregation in between the two.

Here are the embodiments below;

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
