Canon with the 1DX Mark III has started to use HEIF which stands for High Efficiency Image Format. It can match or exceed JPEG's quality in less space. Gordon Lang from CameraLabs compared the 1DX Mark III output to that of HEIF, and also HEIF converted JPEG's as well. It appears as if it certainly allows for greater latitude in the image file - however it certainly appears that it does have the latitude that you have in a RAW file. The 1DX Mark III is starting to ship on February 13th 2020. Preorder yours today. Also if you are in the continental USA, you can get PayBoo from B&H that will virtually eliminate any sales tax you pay on your purchase. With the price of a 1DX Mark III being $6499, that savings can be very significant.
