Given the success and the incredible capability of Sony's stacked sensors, this certainly is something that Canon needs to do quickly, and this patent goes through a variety of ways of stacking an processing unit behind an image sensor. Keep in mind that these are published patent applications. There is still steps involved before Canon actually receives a patent, and this may take years.
