Canon Patent Application: More Fast RF VCM Primes

RF 20mm F1.4 VCM, 21mm F1.4 VCM, 28mm F1.4 VCM

This patent application (2025-015010) shows the real production version of the RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM.

However, other embodiments may emerge in the future. Interestingly, the same overall optical element design was used for the RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM, but it does not appear to be an actual embodiment.

Canon has never had "L" lenses in the 20, 28 or 21mm focal lengths, but they are popular with other brands and OEMs.

This patent application mentions that they wanted to make the lens with less focus breathing, which would certainly be advantageous for video-related hybrid lenses.

To provide an optical system that is compact yet has high optical performance by suppressing aberrations and fluctuations in the angle of view that occur during focusing.

This is a Patent Application Only

As with all patent applications, this is a look into Canon’s research and potential future development. While we know this patent application did show embodiments that made it into an actual release, other embodiments may or may not make it into actual products.
