Canon 200D/SL2 replacement mentioned

The Canon SL2 (or the 200D depending upon your market) was announced on June 28th, 2017.  While it’s certainly not uncommon to have rebel, cameras replaced after two years, it would be telling if this was the first one that is.  The other rebels, the 77D and the T7i (800D) were announced a few months earlier actually making them older cameras.  It could be that the diminutive SL2 is a more popular camera.

There is no doubt that all three rebels need updates, as they are all older cameras with pre DIGIC 8 and non-4K.

Even though the SL2 replacement has been discovered in certification, it could be 2020 before we see an actual replacement.  Certification can occur easily 6 or more months in advance.

In the past, the higher end Rebels and the SL2 / 200D and the original SL1/100D were all announced on;

  • 200D/SL2 – June 28th, 2017
  • 77D and T7i – February 14, 2017
  • T6s and T6i – February 6, 2015
  • 100D – March 21, 2014
  • T5i – March 21, 2013
  • T4i – June 8, 2012

Clearly, Canon has three months in which they like to announce Rebels in, February (before CP+), after CP+ and the shows wind down in late March, or in June.  That doesn’t mean that Canon is forced to announce in those months, just that they are more likely to do so.

The rumor, for now, has no specifications or release date, so things are not anywhere close to being released.   We can probably safely say that a March release is not happening and the next probable date is June or early in 2020.
