Cinema EOS products have only been around since 2011, three years after Canon turned the industry on its head with the 5D Mark II - the first full-frame digital stills camera to shoot HD video. All of the documentaries were shot with Canon equipment. The winner last night was Free Solo directed by Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhely and was shot with; Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Canon Cinema Primes Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 The other nominees were as follows; Film: “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” dir. RaMell Rossc3 Canon 5D Mark III Film: “Minding the Gap,” dir. Bing Liu Canon 5D (no indication which mark) Canon EF 16-35mm Lens Film: “Of Fathers and Sons,” dir. Talal Derki Canon Cinema EOS C300 Film: “RBG,” Betsy West, dir. Julie Cohen Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II Canon EF 16-35mm Canon EF 24-70mm Canon EF 70-200mm Canon EF 400mm Over the past, oh, maybe 4 years the running theme in some circles is that Canon clearly doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to video, even in the Cini EOS lineup as scathing article after article has come out especially on some websites. However, it remains that Canon has great color and great ergonomics, especially in its EOS CINI lineup, and has certainly found a niche in the real world. Personally, I think that's one reason why Canon doesn't put all its effort into the RF or EF video. Simply because they look at it, and believe that the best ergonomics for video is in the CINI world, and not in the digital stills camera world.
