Canon News Roundup - Updated 5:30PM July 8th

The rumors and leaks are starting to happen at a quickening pace as we are only 24 hours away from Canon's official announcement.

Nokishita has broken a lot over the last 24 hours, as has other sources, and of course we have CanonRumors to thank for breaking the R5 and R6 out in late January.  Creating single posts would get a bit crazy for each tidbit over the next 24 hours. So here's what we know right now, and we'll live update this as we get more information.  I fully expect that we'll have full specifications in around 12 or so hours.

First Update - 8:44am - we got some pricing for the R5 and R6 from Nokishita.  R5 is £4199, the R6 is £2499 (body only) and the R6 with 24-105 STM is £2899.  That converts to USD taking into account VAT at around $4250 USD, $2500 USD and $2900 respectively.

Update - 5:40PM - We got the specifications of the R6 and R5 now.  They are brief but will give you a better idea of the features.

Update 5:40PM - A Japanese CNET article has leaked - it has some interesting tidbits we've added to each of the sections.

Update: 6:20PM - CanonRumors got the USD pricing. $3899 whoot!

Canon Cameras

Canon EOS R6

.

We haven't received much information yet on the R6 - however we have heard not officially that it's a 20MP sensor that is supposedly a derivative of the 1DX Mark III sensor.  That's good news for everyone hoping that it would have Canon's latest-generation sensor in it.  You can now look at how the 1DX Mark III responds in terms of DR,etc to get an idea on how the R6 will do.  I suggest looking at photonsonphotos.com.  We also know that it will feature something Canon calls: Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and will use DIGIC X.  It will be available in late August.

We've received the updated pricing on the R6 from a UK dealer. That takes into account VAT and works out to around R6 is £2499 (body only) and the R6 with 24-105 STM is £2899.  That roughly converts to $2500 and $2900 USD for the body only and kit configurations.

According to CNET - R6 is the new "standard" full frame camera, and not an "entry level" camera.  R5 moves further upscale.

AF is the same as the R5, the shutter is rated for 300,000 instead of the R5's 500,000.

Body is polycarbonate exterior with a magnesium alloy interior with a lead die cast screw hole.

Will shoot 5.1K oversampled up to 4K60p.  CanonLog is supported as well as 10 bit 4:2:2

Canon EOS R5

I'm starting to wonder if there has ever been a Canon camera with so much pent up excitement before release.  The R5 should be all accounts be a groundbreaking camera - the first 8K ILC camera, not to mention the first 8K ILC camera that can record internally.  The big news that we have recently heard is that it will start shipping in July!! Original rumors had it not shipping until some time in September.

CanonRumors also states that there is one special new feature for stills photographers that they haven't told us about yet.  Since CanonRumors has been right from the start, I'd start holding your breath.  The theories are either DGO (dual gain output sensor) or pixel shifting.

We've received the updated pricing on the R5 from a UK dealer. That takes into account VAT and works out to around R5 is £4199 (body only).

Make no mistake - this will be a highly sought after camera, you had best get on a pre-order list as fast as possible if you want ANY chance of getting in on the first shipments.

From the CNET article we know that the body is magnesium alloy with the tripod screw hole being zinc die cast.  It's according to CNET, dust a drip proof.  EVF framerate supports up to 120Hz.  We've added in CIPA ratings from the CNET Article.

AF according to CNET will even be able to detect shoes, helmets and the back of the subject.

What we do know about the video details;

  • 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps
  • 8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265).
  • 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). 4K external recording is also available up to 59.94 fps.
  • No crop 8K and 4K video capture using the full-width of the sensor.*
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF available in all 8K and 4K recording modes.
  • Canon Log available in 8K and 4K internal recording modes.
  • A Canon first, the EOS R5 will feature 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization, which works in conjunction with Optical IS equipped with many of the RF and EF lenses.
  • Dual-card slots: 1x CFexpress and 1x SD UHS-II.

Camera Accessories

Four accessories are accompanying this release. Two grips and two teleconverters.

Canon WFT-R10 Wifi Grip

This grip is going to provide advanced Wifi (most like extended 5Ghz range) and also what appears to be a network socket on the end.  This will augment both the R5 and maybe the R6 as well with advanced communications that are usually not seen outside of the 1 series camera bodies.

Canon BG-R10 Grip

This is your standard battery grip for a Canon Camera. We don't have much details, but going by past battery grips, it will take two batteries, and provide around double the CIPA shots. This is obviously much more important for mirrorless as the battery life isn't as good as DSLR's.  As with the other grip, it's supposed to work on both the R5 and maybe the R6 as well.  That however has not been confirmed.

Canon RF 1.4x teleconverter

  • 7 elements in 4 groups
  • Size: 71.2mm x 20.3mm (mounted) 40.7mm (total length)
  • Weight: 225g

Canon RF 2.0x teleconverter

  • 9 elements in 5 groups
  • Size: 71.2mm x 39.3mm (mounted) 60.6mm (total length)
  • Weight: 340g

Canon Printer

ImagePROGRAF Pro-300

We know little about this printer, but have received images for it - we expect not many details on this until release, but you never know.
